Karma Automotive is bringing a new business plan and new product to the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. Set to be revealed next month, the completely updated Karma Revero looks to shake off past criticisms and corporate dramas.Karma Automotive wants a second chance at making a good first impression. In fact, it wants three of them.
“Karma is a luxury automaker but we are not just a luxury automaker,” said Dr. Lance Zhou, Karma Automotive's CEO, in a written statement intended to hint at what the automaker has in store next month in China. “Taken together, Karma’s Shanghai Big Three represents our transformation from an old-value car manufacturer to a company building long-term value in part by becoming an open platform luxury high-tech automotive incubator.
Now, if you're familiar with the Karma story at all, you'll know the company experienced a tortured history that seemed doomed to be DeLorean-like in terms of its brevity. Penned by Danish-born automotive designer, Henrik Fisker, the man who spearheaded the seductive shape of cars like the BMW Z8 roadster and Aston Martin DB9 supercar, the first Fisker Karma had dramatic lines to draw a crowd.
The Karma Revero has a gas-electric powetrain that offers 50 miles of EV range, before a GM-sourced four-cylinder kicks in to provide 300 total miles of range. While it's dramatic looking, the Revero is highly impractical compared to rivals from Tesla and other luxury brands.
