Lady Cathy Ferguson, wife of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has died, the family has announced “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild,” they said.The couple gave welcomed their first son, Mark, two years later, followed by twins, Darren and Jason, in 1972.

Sir Mark has often spoken openly about how his wife has supported his career with Manchester United FC. When he announced his retirement as United manager in 2013, he said: “My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.”

She helped to convince her husband to reverse plans to retire in 2002. He went on to manage the club for 11 more years before eventually leaving after Lady Cathy’s sister died.
