Like many times before, the subjects at the center of The Mountain Goats latest release, “Jenny From Thebes,” are rich, vividly-detailed personas with deep backstories and multidimensional characteristics.
“It’s funny, when it comes to writing, I don’t ask myself what I’m doing,” said Darnielle. “I just sort of sit down and a phrase comes out. I was at the piano about a year ago, and I was working on this B minor chord progression. Then I just barked out the first thing that came to mind, and it was ‘Jenny was a warrior, Jenny was a thief.’” And that was the beginning right there.”
