During the October 2023 solar eclipse, most of the moon will block the sun in the early afternoon, creating what appears to be a ring of fire around the moon.

The moon’s maximum coverage of the sun — just one small corner of the sun’s lower-right side — will occur at 1:22 p.m., with the moon moving away from the sun by 2:36 p.m., according to TimeAndDate.knowExperts say special safety glasses will be needed to view the upcoming partial solar eclipse in October 2023 and the bigger solar eclipse in April 2024. Without the glasses, eye damage can occur.

Areas shaded in red are within the "path of totality" for the solar eclipse that will occur on April 8, 2024, so those places will experience a full total eclipse as the moon completely blocks the sun during the afternoon.In some areas of the United States, the April 2024 solar eclipse will be a more significant event than the October eclipse, because the sun will get completely blocked by the moon.
