| If the two most important bills Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has introduced are anything to go by, it’s fair to say the most senior Republican in Congress is governing from a Democrat base.
McCarthy’s nemesis, Florida-based Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz, is now ready to move a motion to vacate the speaker’s chair. McCarthy is not flinching. To be fair to McCarthy, the House Freedom Caucus is pushing harder than before to achieve bigger cuts in government spending than previously flagged.
Part of the reason is that McCarthy knows voters blame Republicans more for any shutdown than they would Democrats, who, in turn, are more reluctant than Republicans to cut spending.
