Handsworth's self-portrait project 40 years on: 'Giving people that voice was extraordinary'

On 18 August 1979, Kanta Korotania and her twin sister, Amerjit, got wind that something unusual was going on just down the road from where they lived in the Birmingham suburb of Handsworth. Outside the terraced house at 81 Grove Lane, three men had hung a plain white photographic backdrop from the front window. A few metres away, fixed to a tripod, was a motor-driven 35mm Nikon camera with a long cable release.

I grew up just round the corner.

OMG!! 40's on, full of refugees sell drugs and imposing religious laws!! Gone are the days of UB40 and great Indian food... Caliphate dreams...
