Irish comedian Siomha Hennessy skilfully melds storytelling and music in her lively comedy performance, delivering a timeless portrayal of the female experience with a raw edge

Barely in the door from a very successful run at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Dublin comic and musician Siomha Hennessy is taking her show The Coil's Lament to Dublin's iteration of the fête.

Read more: Siomha Hennessy became a TikTok sensation during lockdown and now she's playing Edinburgh Fringe "It’s about a woman trying to find a genuine place, her place and her path. And within that navigating the contradictions of being a woman in your thirties and wanting different things. Navigating both wanting connection and partnership and also being so bored with all of it, and terribly uninspired by what's on offer, and not necessarily being too excited by the life that you see happening to people when they partner up and have children and all that.

A dirge about breakups where she considers the idea that some of the nicest things a man says to you over an entire relationship can be uttered while he dumps you is an earnest and all too relatable lament, which is quickly lifted by bits airing the unfairness of being a "foster girlfriend" and the fear of oversharing at parties.

"In order to get a house, you can’t in this economy do that as a single person, so you’re paying more in rent than your peers who have a combined income. There are just so many things that make you feel marginalised as a single person in this economy. And women are at an economical disadvantage for other reasons too, the pay gap and so on. The show is about navigating all of that, so I definitely think that my politics come into it.

For many, this might dreg up thoughts of lost passion projects and creative ideas that never saw life. Siomha herself says that without the supports she has, she would not have been able to bring her show to fruition.
