Each week, Benjamin Law asks public figures to discuss the subjects we’re told to keep private by getting them to roll a die. The numbers they land on are the topics they’re given. This week, he talks to Mark Coles Smith. A winner of AACTA and Helpmann awards, the 36-year-old is best known for playing a young Jay Swan in ABC TV’s. In 2023, he became the first Indigenous person to be nominated for a Gold Logie.
My parents were academics. My mother lectured in Indigenous mental health and community development in universities across Australia. Up until the age of 10, I pretty much shadowed her in different postings around the country, which gave me a rich and diverse exposure to communities around Australia. It set the terrain for me to explore being a bit of a social chameleon.Never go into debt. Only buy something if you can afford it and if you need it.
It was one of the most difficult experiences in my life; a very intimate loss. It was a connection that I had with someone I’ve never had since. And I was the last person with him. I have to carry that awareness – the question of what I could have done better – for the rest of my life. You only get one chance to save someone’s life and I missed it. I hope the documentary contributes to the national conversation, and personally honours his memory.
