| After days of searching his ruined city, Usama Al Husadi called his wife’s phone one more time with little hope. Once again he found it was switched off.

The water roared into the city centre, knocking down blocks of flats and erasing entire neighbourhoods. Witnesses have said the tsunami-like flash flood hit with little warning and residents were only alerted by the explosive sound of the dams rupturing.Phone lines were immediately cut and the city had no evacuation plans. Whole families drowned together. When the waters receded the city’s streets were filled with bodies.
