Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT A lost horror movie classic of the silent era is set to live again, staged as a full-cast audio drama. Lon Chaney Jr. was an international superstar when he appeared in London After Midnight, a gothic horror movie directed by the legendary Tod Browning. Released by MGM in 1927, the film was a hit with audiences, spurring the studio to renew their contract with Chaney.
It may indeed be impossible for today’s audiences to ever experience Chaney and Browning’s 1927 cinematic collaboration, but the story presented in London After Midnight will get new non-cinematic life thanks to an upcoming full-cast audio production from Scripted Audio Drama.
London After Midnight is part murder mystery, part vampire thriller and part gothic ghost story as businessman Sir James Hamlin seeks to uncover the identities of the tenants living in the Balfour mansion, long neglected since the suicide of Roger Balfour five years earlier.
London After Midnight Has Been Recreated Before Considered one of the holy grails of lost cinema, London After Midnight today exists only as a series of production stills, which in 1985 were compiled into a recreation of the movie’s plot. In 2002, TCM commissioned a new restoration made using these same stills, with added camera motion, and released the 45-minute film as part of a Chaney DVD box set.
