Evans would rather have a sign enforcing the city’s ordinance of no parking downtown between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Main Street out front to deter people from parking there, he told the Board of Public Works at its September 6 meeting. He’s glad that people who come downtown to drink aren’t driving afterward, but leaving their vehicles in front of the theater often causes logistics problems for him the next day, he said.
Evans can’t have the cars towed from the spots because they’re on a public street, but the police can if they can’t locate the owners, Clerk-Treasurer Deb Longer said. There are signs near the theater denoting the no-parking times, Parks Director Kelly Goodpaster told the board, but they were obscured by flower baskets. Those baskets, however, were supposed to come down Sept. 8, and she suggested the signs be lowered once that happened.
As for putting a sign in front of the theater, the city would have to create a stable foundation for it, and that would be expensive. But the board said it would figure out a solution.Michelle L. Quinn is a freelance reporter for the Post-Tribune.
