There’s the easy way to tell whether Hisense’s new high-end TV, the ULED X, is any good, and there’s the hard way.
We’ve written about backlit TVs many times before, mostly to tell you how much we don’t like them. Or, rather, didn’t like them.like the ULED X have pixels that require a light source behind them, nowadays often in the form of hundreds or thousands of LED light globes.
Judging from how black the screen is in areas where it needs to be black, and judging from how often we could see where one dimming zone ended and another began , 5000 dimming zones might just be the magic number.The easy way to test picture quality is to fiddle with a control Hisense has conveniently provided in the TV’s settings menus, turning the backlight dimming zone system off – or to low, medium or high.
On medium, it’s getting pretty good. It’s still a little contrasty for our tastes, but some people might like its punchiness.In the areas where OLED normally shines, such as black levels and colour saturation, the ULED X is close enough to be indistinguishable for practical purposes. Blacks are black, there’s no blooming unless you’re viewing from extreme angles, and colours are deep and rich.
When watching high-quality content such as 4K shows with some sort of high-dynamic-range encoding, there were 67 distinct TV or movie scenes where we definitely preferred the Hisense version to the LG version, and there were 45 scenes where we preferred the LG to the Hisense.
