Kodansha's Thunder 3 transforms manga art.

While manga has always been a medium for artists to stretch the boundaries of what is artistically feasible, Kodansha's Thunder 3 sets the high-water mark for artistic innovation by using a groundbreaking technique that's been recently used to great effect in anime. Experimentation with art style has always been a part of any visual medium, and Thunder 3's experimental style marks it as one of the most interesting recent manga.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT To understand the genius of Yuki Ikeda's art style in Thunder 3, it's important to first understand the story because it's the story that provides the reason for having such a unique art style. The story follows Pyontaro and his two school friends. Like most teenage boys, they'd rather avoid homework, play video games, hang out on social media, and look cool to the girls they like at school.

With the story's alternate world focus, Ikeda takes the chance to mash up two artistic styles. While it's common for artists to draw real and fantasy worlds in the same style, Ikeda not only chose to give each world its own art style but also decided to keep the two art styles distinct even when they are interacting with one another. As such, Ikeda delivers a first-of-its-kind artistic rendition of the story that is mesmerizing to see.

Thunder 3's Varied Art Styles Create Incredible Contrast For the prime world, or the world that Pyontaro and Futaba are from, Ikeda used an old-school cartoon style. The characters and environment are all depicted in the style of the children's manga and comics of two decades ago. That is, the characters seem better placed in a comedy manga rather than the gloomy story of Thunder 3. Conversely, the alternate world that Futaba fell into is the exact opposite.

The mix of flat, cartoony 2D imaging with super-realistic and/or CGI rendering is not new. The 2018 blockbuster movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced its potential to the worldwide public. But Ikeda's use of it in Thunder 3 is one of the rare, if only, depictions of its distinct look and style in manga form.
