There must be consolations in middle age, but none of them can be found in the most recent season offranchise – that depicts its heroines in their 50s, still attempting to be “f---ing fabulous”, to use a Samantha-ism, but more often landing on something altogether less certain.Credit:
Samantha does appear for a cameo in the latest series, having attempted to get over to New York to see Carrie, only to be thwarted by London fog. No attempt is made to reschedule the trip, which seems wise. Miranda, married to the solid Steve, has discovered in midlife that she is queer, and this could be an interesting story, but instead it is used as a vehicle to reveal to Miranda how stupid and out-of-touch she is with contemporary mores. For those of us who loved the original show, and saw something of ourselves in the protagonists , it is difficult to know what to make of this trashing of the canon.
I think the show’s real offence is its timidity – as mentioned, Carrie, alleged sexual anthropologist, is too prudish to correctly name her anatomy on her podcast, to the extent where she would rather wind the project up than say the v-word.Later in the series, Carrie is offended when Charlotte asks her if she has a condom because Carrie believes that implies she might have an STD.
