Borgli’s resulting film premiering this weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival, as an ingeniously layered commentary on its star’s bizarre and ongoing cultural permanence. Cage plays a mild-mannered professor named Paul Matthews who goes instantly viral after emerging as a mysterious character in a majority of the world’s subconscious lives.
That’s where things get sticky—and fun. If there’s one thing to know about instant fame in 2023, it’s that the lows land just as fast as the highs. His circumstances never align with his hopes. He learns, for instance, that he’s a silent bystander in everyone’s initial dreams of him—a worthless witness to murder, to assault, to tragic accidents. This upsets him; he yearns to be heroic, not passive.
Borgli brings style all his own though, especially when it comes to the dreams themselves. The camera captures the feeling of dreams with surprising verisimilitude, highlighting omissions of detail in the frame which indicate a certain level of surreality. At times, the story moves between realms in the same space. For example: In real life, a given bookshelf will be lined with real books; in a dream that follows, set in the same room, the shelves might be empty, or feature tomes without titles.
