Government protection of an airline that has turned on its customers is a symptom of an over-regulated industry

When governments try to pick winners, they risk getting sucked into the turbulence of the business they seek to support.

At the end of a turbulent week, the government has still not provided any coherent or formal reason why it has blocked extra competition to protect a local airline that isfor selling cancelled seats to passengers in order to deny landing slots to rival airlines. The airline championed by the government is now being sued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for selling tickets on 8000 flights it already had decided to cancel – including flights that the competition regulator suggested were advertised, then cancelled, so that Qantas could hoard its airport landing slots and keep them away from rivals.
