HOUSTON — A federal judge has blocked a new Texas law that drag artists fear will be used to shut them down or put them in jail.A group of drag performers and LGBTQ+ rights advocates sued to keep the law from taking effect Sept. 1. Republicans removed some explicit references to drag shows in response to criticism.

Instead the final text expands the definition of criminal sexual conduct to include sexual gestures that use “accessories or prosthetics that exaggerate male or female sexual characteristics” and are done in front of children.The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting.
