Playing a young man who betrayed and poisoned two retirees, Irish actor Eanna Hardwicke was surprised when viewers said they were “moved” by his performance.

aired across Britain over four nights on the BBC last month, people started to recognise one of the trio of leads, the Irish actor Eanna Hardwicke, in the street. The limited series is a crime drama that carefully recreates the heinous betrayal and murder of two elderly neighbours by a monstrous conman, but the overwhelming reaction Hardwicke received from strangers was that they were “moved” by the show.

“I was honestly shellshocked by it for so many different reasons. I thought that what Sarah does with this is tell the story of Peter and Ann’s lives as well as their deaths. That’s such a complex thing,” Hardwicke says. “This is centred on a cruel, horrendous crime, a crime based on a deceitful love, and alongside that is a resounding note which is the opposite: the love of their families, the courage to get justice for them.

Field told Farquhar, who was four decades his senior, that he was preparing for the priesthood but also that he loved him. They became engaged, Farquhar put Field in his will, and Field cared for Farquhar as the ageing academic grew ill and worried for his sanity – the result of Field poisoning him with a variety of substances.

“We’re so used to seeing the schematic of television. ‘This is the bit where this is going to happen’, ‘this is the bit where that’s going to happen’. I find it rare to watch a series that surprises you, but that’s the thing I look for – the gold dust.” Hardwicke says. “It takes careful, rigorous writing to do that and it takes a director who has a very strong vision. What I’m most proud of – and I take no credit for this – is that the show doesn’t play to convention.
