A first look for Westerners at Miyazaki's final film.

Images from The Boy and the Heron, the final film by Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki, have at last begun to make their way online, and even these few images seem to indicate that the film will truly be a spectacle. The four images, shared on X by @DiscussingFilm, showcase the movie's protagonist, a flock of birds, a mysterious floating object, and a somewhat terrifying heron with human-like teeth, providing a tantalizing first glimpse at what the film will be like.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Miyazaki's Final Film Remains Mysterious After New Images The images shared don't really offer much insight into the story of the film, which is said to revolve around Mahito Maki, a young boy who discovers a mysterious abandoned tower which brings him into contact with a fantastical new world alongside a talking heron.

Fans outside of Japan have naturally been very curious about the film, due in no small part to the oddly quiet release that Miyazaki's end-of-an-era movie received. The film is known to be inspired by the book How Do You Live?, which is also the film's Japanese title, but rather than being an adaptation of the book, the book actually appears in the film in Maki's possession.

While more information about The Boy and the Heron is sure to be seen in the coming months, most fans will have to wait for the film's official release abroad, which is said to be coming later this year, according to American distributor GKIDS. While this may not be the last film by Studio Ghibli, it is almost certainly the last to be directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and as such its release will represent the bittersweet end of a major era in anime history.
