Prosecutors dropped charges Wednesday against two men in a Gary shooting because they couldn’t prove the case, court records show.

Charles Barbour III, now 24, and Antwan Lavell Williams, 25, both of Gary, were accused of shooting at a woman and her boyfriend while they were sitting in a parked vehicle Oct. 9, 2016, in the 1900 block of West 15th Avenue, Lt. Dawn Westerfield, a Gary police spokeswoman, said at the time.

The woman was shot in the head and “will have lifelong impairment as a result of the attack,” Westerfield said. Deputy Prosecutor Lindsey Lanham wrote the victim gave an Aug. 1, 2017 statement to police identifying the shooters. However, on Aug. 1, 2023, she admitted she couldn’t remember the shooting and was relying on her mother’s recollection.Williams appeared briefly in court Thursday with his lawyer, while Barbour’s absence was excused. Judge Natalie Bokota granted prosecutors’ request to drop charges.

Barbour and Williams were both charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery by means of a deadly weapon and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, Lake County court records show.
