Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The new horror movie Totally Killer is called out by director Todd Strauss-Schulson for copying his 2015 meta-slasher The Final Girls. Produced by Jason Blum, Totally Killer stars Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka as a young woman who, following the death of her mother at the hands of a serial killer, finds herself flung back in time to 1987 where she must team up with her mom’s younger self to stop the future murderer.
Those who recall The Final Girls have indeed been making noise on social media about the parallels between its plot and that of the new slasher movie Totally Killer, and now the director of the earlier film has weighed in on the matter himself, calling out the new movie for copying his 2015 work.
Totally Killer Sounds Very Similar To The Final Girls A critically well-regarded meta-horror exercise , The Final Girls puts a Scream-like spin on slashers, placing its orphaned heroine and her friends inside a cheesy 1980s-style fright flick, where their knowledge of horror tropes comes in handy.
The similarities don’t end there though. Like The Final Girls, Totally Killer centers on a protagonist who has lost her mother, who is reunited with the dead parent via her reality-bending journey. In The Final Girls, the reunion happens as the lead character Max meets the character played by her Scream Queen mom inside the slasher film Camp Bloodbath.
It’s yet to be seen whether the tone of Totally Killer is also similar to that of The Final Girls, or if the parallels end with the two films’ plot similarities. Totally Killer releases on Prime Video on October 6, at which time it will be possible for audiences to judge for themselves whether it really rips off The Final Girls.
