Rock icon Tina Turner always quipped that she was as famous for her legs as for her voice. But in hindsight, it’s clear that the Queen of Rock should be best remembered for her guts, not her gams.
The magnetic Zurin Villanueva is a kinetic powerhouse, embodying the title role with depth charges of rage and vulnerability that befit the late great singer, who died in May at 83. Villanueva’s purrs and growls and screeches, as she fiercely belts out emblematic songs such as “River Deep-Mountain High,” “Proud Mary,” and “Private Dancer,” capture Turner’s signature vocals while also feeling authentic and fresh.
For his part, Lawrence nails an unnatural mixture of menace and charisma as Ike, a master manipulator, threatens Tina, “You gonna give me trouble.” When the taunts fails, he turns to blows. In a society where men were allowed to batter their wives and cops were allowed to brutalize everyone of color, violence was part of the ecosystem. Even Tina’s mother thinks she should forgive Ike for beating her and her children. It’s the bittersweet memory of the little girl she used to be , watching as her preacher father strikes her mother for disagreeing with him, that fortifies her to move on, despite the risks.
