Both Larson and Cretton were homeschooled as kids, Larson in Sacramento and Cretton in Maui, so her agent thought maybe they’d hit it off. Larson was hungry for a leading role but leery of jumping at the wrong one. Within a matter of pages,was the best script she’d ever read. This was it. This was the role. That message had been passed along to Cretton, but this was show business and you never know.
Everyone on the set seemed to know what they were doing. No one knew what they were doing. “I was dealing with aof impostor syndrome,” Cretton says of those first few days. “I was having, like, major, major panic attacks.” Larson says he hid it well. “He has such a lovely way of doing it”—panicking, she means—“because it doesn’t spread to anybody. You wouldn’t even know he’s, like, paddling underneath.” For Beatriz,was only the third set she’d ever been on in her life.
