Netflix is confirmed to be removing one of its Original, Oscar-winning movies in one region, the latest in a larger trend of content removals.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT A new report reveals that The Power of the Dog, an Oscar-winning Netflix Original movie, is being removed from the platform this month in one region. Directed by Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog hit the streamer in 2021. The film, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch, earned a host of Oscar nominations, with Campion ultimately winning for Best Director.

Now, according to Digital Spy, critically-acclaimed The Power of the Dog will be removed from Netflix UK on August 18. The movie is not currently scheduled for removal from Netflix US, but the move does continue a growing tend among streamers. It's currently unclear whether the film will be available on any other streaming services following its removal, but it's possible it will take after His House, another removed Netflix original, and land on BBC iPlayer.

The Power Of The Dog's Netflix Removal Explained The Power of the Dog represents a somewhat unique case and is different from the other original shows and movies that have recently made headlines for their surprise removals from various streaming services. While branded as a Netflix Original, the production companies actually responsible for The Power of the Dog are BBC Films, New Zealand Film Commission, and Max Films, among others.

Sometimes, Netflix Original movies and shows are branded as such because the streamer handles aspects of these properties' international distributions. The "Original" label given to these films and TV shows does not differentiate between the titles that Netflix is distributing under exclusivity deals and the titles that the streamer has actually co-produced.

A similar situation arose last year with the Netflix Original horror movie His House, which was actually co-produced by BBC Films and New Regency, with Netflix handling the film's international distribution. After its removal from Netflix UK, the Bafta-winning film became available to stream on BBC iPlayer while remaining on Netflix in North America.
