Sargeant X Comrade’s roles as musicians, mentors, record-label owners and general community-builders in Calgary’s hip-hop and underground music scene tend to overlap.
“We went in there with an idea to do this concept album,” Bykovets says. “It’s using all the retro instruments to create the sound of the future with old-school vintage technology.” Not unlike Sargeant X Comrade’s previous albums — 2020’s Magic Radio and 2021’s The Elephant in the Room — the sounds somehow click together with energy and craft and maintain a sense of unpredictability even when the vibes are mellow. On When the Stars Align, Sargeant’s spoken-word verses turn into soulful melodies beneath complex rhythms and Poliah’s jazzy piano riffs before opening to rhymes by local rapper K-Riz.
In 2021, Sargeant X Comrade launched Mo Gravy Records to put out both their own music and like-minded artists. So far, the label has released four albums including K-Riz’s Peace & Love. Bykovets hopes to boost the output from the label. Upcoming projects include unreleased material from Marvin Kee. Kee was a long-time collaborator with Sargeant X Comrade — he gets a co-write credit on eight of the 12 songs on Lo Fi Future — and staple of their live shows.
