Sinead O'Connor: Acclaimed Dublin singer dies aged 56

The Dublin native achieved international recognition in 1990 with her powerful ballad The Nothing Compares 2 U. O'Connor was never far from the headlines and courted controversy once ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul on Irish TV.

Yet the mother of three's personal life was often beset with tragedy, her son Shane died last year aged just 17. In her last Tweet, O'Connor posted a photo of Shane and said: "Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. "We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost without him."In tribute Comedian Dara Ó Briain said: "Sinead O’Connor has died. That’s just very sad news. Poor thing.
