New figures released to Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin show that between a drop off in renewals and newly purchased licences, TV licence fee revenue dropped by €934,000 across June and the first week of July compared to the same period last year.

Revenue from TV licence renewals fell by over €500,000 during the first week of July compared to the same period last year, new figures have shown.

A decline in people paying the €160 fee was widely expected following weeks of explosive revelations about RTÉ’s finances. Some 1,165 new TV licences were also issued during the first week of July 2023. This was down from 1,928 the previous year . In June 2022, 66,047 people renewed their TV licence. This dropped to 64,419 for June 2023. The number of new licence sales, meanwhile, dropped slightly from 9,020 to 9,002.

Deputy Griffin said that the fact that licence fee renewals have already dropped so “drastically” does not bode well for the national broadcaster.
