William Devereux, a senior product manager for Microsoft Edge, was surprised to find this week that all of his supposedly private Spotify playlists were suddenly public:silently made all of my private playlists public without my consent. The same happened to my wife too. That’s an absolutely unacceptable privacy violation. Anyone else noticed this happen recently? I haven’t changed any privacy settings.

In other words, there are technically two kinds of “private” playlists. The first kind is one that you haven’t added to your profile. It’s accessible via a link, but no one will see it when they visit your profile. The second is a real “Private Playlist,” which you can create by opening a playlist in the Spotify app, tapping the three dots menu, and hitting “Make private.”, but you can’t do either from the web client, which is annoying.
If you’re still unsure whether or not your playlists are viewable to the public, have a friend visit your Spotify profile to find out if they can see any public playlists. If not, you’re in the clear, but either way, Spotify really needs to simplify this entire process.
