Even so, the canal played an important role in the development of Indianapolis, attracting workers and industry to the city. In the 1980s, it was restored for recreational purposes. Today, it’s a centerpiece of downtown fun, with kayak and swan-shaped pedal boat rentals. You can even take a ride on a Venice-style gondola, complete with Italian crooning guide.
