Issues that have arisen recently in Saskatchewan show it's time to end public religious education in an increasingly diverse province.

Today Saskatchewan’s Education Ministry lists 18 public school divisions, eight separate school divisions and one francophone division, with no mention of the separate Engelfeld division.

The Saskatchewan Party government, which in 2017 amalgamated 12 health regions into a centralized health authority, citing administrative efficiencies and improved patient services, surely understands the concept. Parental choice on educating their children on religion is not the issue here. Freedom of religion is a fundamental right in Canada, and parents have every right to inculcate their children with religious beliefs in their homes or in approved schools they fund themselves.

As Quebec and Newfoundland have demonstrated — and Ontario is currently going down this path — the provision can be overcome with a constitutional amendment challenge under Section 43 of the Constitution Act 1982.Article content
