Star Wars is soon to tell the origin story of the Force, setting up the first Jedi - but it's really time to show the first Sith. The future is bright for Star Wars; at Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced no less than three upcoming movies. One of the most intriguing, by James Mangold, will explore the origin of the Force itself. It's been positioned as the beginning of a whole new era in the Star Wars mythology, the dawn of the Jedi.

Even Palpatine himself doesn't seem to have known the full story, discussing legends rather than facts in the in-universe book Secrets of the Sith. "Legend has it the Jedi Order suffered a deep schism millennia ago," he noted.

Lucasfilm recently published the Star Wars: Timelines reference book, which confirmed the Sith formed 5,000 years before the Battle of Yavin. The Sith homeword is Moraband , visited briefly by Yoda in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. But the precise circumstances of the Sith's formation are a mystery. The Sith have always been tremendously compelling villains, and there's somethin wonderfully appealing in the idea of shining a light on the dark side. It's frankly surreal to consider that this part of the Star Wars timeline, so important and intriguing, is still a mystery. Hopefully that will be rectified sooner rather than later.
