“I’m embarrassed, angry and horrified that we could treat traumatised children in such a cold and heartless way” Charities supporting vulnerable children have condemned the removal of Mickey Mouse art at an asylum centre for lone children

Charities supporting vulnerable children joined the condemnation on Saturday, with Mark Russell, chief executive of The Children’s Society, describing it as a “disgraceful act”.

“I’m embarrassed, angry and horrified that we could treat traumatised and vulnerable children in such a cold and heartless way,” he told“Children and young people seeking safety, already scarred by the trauma of fleeing their homes and dangerous journeys, deserve our care and protection. Instead, they face a hostile culture of disbelief and criticism from government officials.

The National Education Union – the largest union representing teachers across the UK – said the decision to cover up the murals “defies belief”. Kevin Courtney, joint general secretary of the NEU, said: “The decision was apparently taken because the murals were thought to be too welcoming and sent the wrong message. These children have been separated from their families and will be scared and traumatised by their, no doubt, perilous journey to our shores.

“The idea that we cannot offer a safe and welcoming environment to these children is shameful and demonstrates that this Government is not interested in fulfilling our international treaty obligations in respect of vulnerable child refugees.”
