Calgary Herald Archives.1940s: Thousands of visitors were accommodated in peoples’ homes through a special visitors’ bureau established in the 1940s.

1944: The Calgary Stampede bought out the Calgary Artificial Ice Rink Company, bringing in Lloyd Turner to manage the Stampede’s arena and hockey interests.1947: Arena director Jack Dillon died and was replaced by Dick Cosgrave, a 10-time chuckwagon racing1948: When the Calgary Stampeders football team won the western championship, a contingent of fans in western wear and cowboy hats went to cheer them on in the Grey Cup final, in Toronto.
