Zack Snyder has recently revealed the reasoning behind why his sci-fi film was rejected by Lucasfilm, that being that it was an R-rated pitch.

Zack Snyder, director of the upcoming sci-fi movie Rebel Moon, has revealed why Lucasfilm rejected the idea that was initially part of an R-rated pitch for a Star Wars film. Rebel Moon will be released in December 2023 by Netflix, with a limited theatrical release for the film also planned. It is no secret that Rebel Moon initially began as an envisioned Star Wars project by Zack Snyder, with the filmmaker recently revealing why it transitioned into something else and was rejected by Lucasfilm.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In an interview with Empire, Snyder outlined some of the details of his initial pitch to Lucasfilm in the magazine's cover story of Rebel Moon: “The sale [of Lucasfilm to Disney] had just happened. There was that window where, you know, who knows what’s possible? I was like, ‘I don’t want any of your characters. I don’t want to do anything with any known characters, I just want to do my own thing on the side.’ And originally I was like, ‘It should be rated R!’ That was almost a non-starter. I knew it was a big ask, to be honest. But the deeper I got into it, I realized it was probably never going to be what I wanted.

As Snyder points out, his initial pitch to Lucasfilm involved an entirely new cast of characters in an R-rated movie set in the Star Wars galaxy. Snyder mentions that Disney was not overly fond of this idea, partially due to the lack of connective tissue to other Star Wars properties but chiefly because of the R-rating that Snyder had his heart set on.

This is evident by his work with Warner Bros. on the DCEU, in which Snyder's grittier, darker take on characters like Superman and Batman were criticized. This led to the filmmaker somewhat clashing with Warner Bros., leading to his departure from Justice League before releasing his R-rated cut of the film on HBO Max in 2020. The nature of DC is inherently darker than Star Wars, meaning it was probably best for Snyder to seek out another studio like Netflix.
