Moose Jaw is also home to a labyrinth of underground tunnels that are now a tourist attraction because of supposed ties to iconic American mobster Al Capone. Su’s film addresses a separate “urban myth” about the tunnels which suggests that Chinese citizens once lived underground and were forced to work for white business owners.
“A Passage Beyond Fortune follows the Chow family as they reflect on the popular but untrue myth surrounding Moose Jaw’s underground tunnels,” says the NFB. “Filmmaker Weiye Su offers an homage to the culturally significant but buried history of Chinese-Canadian communities in Moose Jaw.” It’s a deeply personal story for Su, a fellow Chinese immigrant who moved to Regina many years ago. He graduated from film school at the University of Regina in 2019 before heading to Toronto.“I think it’s important that we all listen and accept BIPOC perspective,” he said. “In the film industry we always talk about letting the BIPOC storyteller tell the BIPOC story. I think that’s important.”
