High Desert will not be moving forward at Apple TV+. The comedy series, which was directed and executive produced by Austin Powers' Jay Roach, starred Patricia Arquette, Brad Garrett, Weruche Opia, Bernadette Peters, and Rupert Friend. Arquette played Peggy, an addict who attempts to rebuild her life by moving to the small desert town of Yucca Valley, California, and becoming a private investigator.
On Instagram, Patricia Arquette shared a video with the caption "It stinks" explaining that Apple TV+ has made the decision to cancel High Desert after season 1. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT This news comes just 10 days after the season 1 finale aired on the platform on June 21. Arquette expressed her love for the show and the character she got to play, but levelheadedly addressed the cancelation, saying, "Can’t win them all. You know, it sucks but… tough."
The New Streaming Landscape Is Unforgiving Up until recently, many streaming shows that were on the bubble were given about four weeks before decisions were made about their future. Because of the nature of streaming, not every episode or season is viewed on the day it drops, so the viewership numbers are generally calculated across the first 28 days on the air to determine how successful it is.
This reflects a tightening of the belt across the board for streamers, which has manifested in some startling ways recently. For instance, many platforms are not only swiftly canceling their original shows after one season, but removing them from streaming entirely in order to balance out the costs of licensing and residuals.
