Review: Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken - Chicago Reader

, an anxious, blue high school student is forced to hide from her friends and schoolmates, who her mom and dad say won’t understand their family’s seafaring ways. Her mom also asks that she stay out of the ocean, which she dutifully does until one day, after a promposal gone wrong, her crush falls in. She dives in to save him, and—her angsty, previously unknown kraken powers are released.

The rest of the story runs along fairly well-trod kid or teen movie storylines—there’s rebellion against a parent, a friend who’s not what she seems, a crush that becomes something more, and an eventual claiming of her true, whole self—but it never seems stale.
