I headed to my first overnight camp a nervous mess, not knowing a single person there. One week and some cuts, scratches and bug bites later, I walked out with a friend. Not just any friend, but a best friend. And we’ve remained that way for more than a decade since.
“I remember it so vividly,” she told me a few days ago, as we reminisced about that chance meeting. “It’s a very weird, but important background to our friendship.”, which for 123 years has been raising funds to send underprivileged children to camp, I immediately knew that this was the story to tell. I’ve had countless memorable camp experiences throughout the years.
Hesitant because this was not just my first time at camp, but my first time away from my parents for more than a day. Soon, my excitement turned to dread. And I resigned myself to the fact that I was going to be alone for a whole week — without my parents nor any friends, while all the other campers were there with their best pals.
I didn’t immediately notice Olivia to my left, who, too, was awkwardly hiding behind her shy and quiet demeanour. Turns out that she was also the sole student from her school. The instructor, a woman at least four decades older than me, then plainly asked: “Do you take private lessons?”“Who’s your teacher?” she inquired. The instructor’s steely face lit up. In the same moment, Olivia snapped her head to the right so quickly that I thought she would sprain her neck.
That week flew by, but we kept in touch and saw each other the following year. Years after that, we ended up going to to the same high school, and our friendship continued to blossom from there.
