Same. So we tracked down its rock stars.

’s new High-Tech Relaxer Facial. My eyes are willingly closed and my teeth are unwillingly clenched. No matter how many times I go to spas, my anxiety insists on being my plus-one. I so look forward to relaxing, but because it never quite feels normal to be wearing only my underwear under a blanket, even in my own home let alone on a cushioned slab in an imposter syndrome-inducing luxury resort, relaxing becomes a bigger challenge than if I weren’t getting a spa treatment.

I cope with the terrifying prospect of glowing skin and less muscle tension by concentrating my anxious brain waves on the music the spa is pumping into its treatment rooms. As the cleansing course begins, I hear what sounds a bit like the love theme from. Manual exfoliation and an LED mask are accompanied by what strikes me as a less ominous version of theSimone tells me he likes to switch to “more emotional” music before he begins the facial massage portion of the treatment.

Perhaps I’m a stone-cold weirdo, but I very intentionally focus on the music that plays during a massage or facial. As someone who is entirely too inclined to wander down a mental laundry list of topics while trying to relax , actively listening to the music helps me stay in and enjoy the moment. And if the music falls in line with my personal preferences , it may not enhance the visible results of my facial, but it absolutely enhances my overall experience.

My dear friend Alle Connell, a beauty writer and consultant based in Philadelphia, feels decidedly different than I do about how noticeable spa music should be. “To me, spa music should be like a white-painted hallway: utterly unobjectionable. It's never the main vibe, it's a sub vibe that cruises just below your perception,” she tells me. If she had it completely her way, “I’d probably listen to straight-up white noise — the louder and more staticky, the better.

Although Alle prefers nondescript buzzing over, say, nature sounds or the waiting-in-line-to-get-on-Space Mountain score, she shares a spa music curiosity with me. “I wonder if you can become famous in the spa music world?” she ponders. “Are certain composers known for their amazing ocean-lapping-the-shore work?”Steve Gordon is a spa music rock star.
