’s iconic performance in the central role? His move from desperate divorced dad Daniel Hillard to elderly Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire is the stuff of celluloid legend and I doubted that the theatre would be able to come anywhere near to rivalling this. But that was before I saw Gabriel Vick in the part.
Director Jerry Zaks and the rest of the creative team must be praying to whichever gods they can find that Vick never has to take any time off, as he is the generator of all the show’s momentum. Daniel Hillard is a freelance voice artist and the sort of puppyishly chaotic man-child who is a delight for his children and the worst nightmare of his beleaguered wife Miranda . Daniel deploys his range of voices but denies his emotions and Miranda sensibly files for divorce.
She is awarded sole custody; if Daniel can get his work and living situation sorted, there might be some renegotiation. A distraught Daniel does what any sensible man would in this situation: he creates an unlikely female persona and answers Miranda’s advertisement for a nanny.Daniel is, of course, considerably better at being in the family home as Mrs Doubtfire than he was as himself.
