The actor who played Mr. Sulu in the original series will speak at the Tobin Center in San Antonio. He also makes time for Trekkers

$35 to $75 for the talk alone; $150 for premium seating and a post-show meet-and-greet and photo with Takei,Takei said he doesn't keep up as a viewer with new series such as"Star Trek: Strange New World" because he simply doesn’t have time. Instead, he pours much of his energy into his lifelong mission to alert people to the importance and the fragility of democracy. Part of that effort involves sharing his own story of being sent with his family to Japanese internment camps.

Takei was 5 years old when armed soldiers came to his home, pounded on the door and ordered the family to leave. They were taken first to a racetrack, where people were housed in horse stalls while the camps were being built. They were imprisoned for three years. “I grew up as an American who was categorized as an enemy alien by my own country, the United States of America, and ordered by the president of the Unites States to be imprisoned in a prison camp, simply because we happened to look like the people that bombed Pearl Harbor,” he said. “Simply because of our race, how we look, we were imprisoned, with no charges, no trial, no due process. It’s one of the most egregious violations of our constitution.

“With that history, I’ve always been conscious that my mission in life is to educate my fellow Americans about that kind of abuse at times of terror. Americans are just as human as anybody else, and when something horrific happens, we act out of ignorance and fear. And that’s what Roosevelt did. And that’s what happened to Japanese Americans.”

Lea Salonga and George Takei appear in the filmed version of the Broadway musical “Allegiance.” The production chronicles the World War II internment of Japanese Americans. Takei will speak about his own childhood experiences in an internment camp as well as his time in “Star Trek” during a talk at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. His family’s experience inspired the musical “Allegiance,” in which he starred throughout its life, including its runs on Broadway and in London.
