The Surf Sports Park in Del Mar was the scene for the second concert of the Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival on Saturday evening. Like Thursday’s opener, it was another concert of Beethoven and Mozart, plus one. The programmatic guest was Michael Abels.
Abels’ first film score, for Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” was intriguing in its use of African influences in an otherwise typical horror soundtrack. His subsequent work with Peele displayed more subtlety than the average Hollywood horror film composer, but never really transcended the genre as Abels did in “Get Out.”His concert music discography reveals a competent populist.
Gustav Mahler arranged Beethoven’s String Quartet for a string orchestra. It’s an effective transformation, especially when played as well as the All-Star Orchestra strings did under Francis’ direction. Attacks and intonation were precise. There was no loss of textural clarity in the arrangement, and lyrical lines were given additional sweetness when played by an entire section. It was a powerful performance.
