To begin, I drew directly onto the wall using oil pastels. For best results, use the side of the pastel, and apply liberally with large, abstract, arching strokes. Don’t be afraid to overlap, and definitely don’t hold back: unleash your inner Llewelyn-Bowen. Although Iadvise sticking to a limited colour palette of four or so shades to avoid technicolour dream coat vibes. Unless, of course, that’s your thing; I don’t judge.
If your heart is set on a fireplace accent wall, I would err on the side of subtlety. Rather than painting your wall in a contrasting colour or covering it in a bold patterned wallpaper, why not paint it the same colour but in a different paint finish? Personally, I love high gloss walls – not only are they super glam, but they also throw light and reflection back into the room – and don’t be afraid to embrace darker colours like blood red or deep green.
If you’re a messy painter , I’d suggest going for a water-based gloss rather than oil, and remember that 80 per cent of decorating is in the prep, so make sure to sand the wall good and proper. Gloss paint, in particular, needs the smoothest and most well-sanded of walls, and you’ll need at least two coats for best results. Although it pains me to say it, sometimes there’s a lot to be said for being understated.
Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to unearth a handmade wallpaper from the early 19th century during their renovation, but there are some fabulous block-printed wallpapers out there if you have the time and energy to hunt around. Personally, I find the best place to source vintage wallpaper is good old eBay – not always the most inspiring shopping destination for a browse, but most dealers are on there if you dig a little deeper.
