Disney will release two new Star Wars movies in 2026 and one in 2027, and while this strategy has many potential problems, each issue can be avoided.

Disney's new Star Wars movie release plan has several potential problems, but there are ways these can be avoided and create a great new era for the franchise. The company recently updated the release schedule for its upcoming films, including two Star Wars movies released in 2026 and one in 2027. This will be the first time that two Star Wars movies are released in the same year, and it also means that audiences will be getting three movies in 18 months.

Of course, Disney will have had more time to develop its next slate of films and to have learned from past mistakes. Abrams initially had less than three years when he signed on to direct The Force Awakens, then he had a little over two years when he agreed to take over on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The three new Star Wars directors will not have that problem, since each will have had at least three years from the time their movies were announced.

5 Disney Has Struggled Marketing Star Wars Movies So Close Together Disney has never released two Star Wars movies in the same year, but the company has released two films within six months of each other, which unfortunately did not end well. Solo came out six months after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, arguably the most divisive entry in the franchise, and this may have diminished the level of excitement for the next standalone film.

3 So Many Separate Star Wars Movies Could Be Confusing To Audiences Having the new Star Wars movies set across the timeline sounds exciting for hardcore fans, but it may also be confusing for audiences. Disney already alternated between the sequel trilogy era and the original trilogy era with their last slate of films, and the next three movies will be set over 25,000 years.
