. I knew I couldn’t fill his shoes but I did my best to promote transparency and hold government officials accountable.I followed the money as best I could. This meant tracking how municipalities, school districts and other taxing bodies in the south and southwest suburbs spent funds collected from property taxes. But it also meant much more.
The city of Chicago’s overall property tax rate was 6.7%. Tax rates were 9.6% in Elk Grove Village, 10.1% in Park Ridge and 11.1% in Rolling Meadows, and they were 21% in Chicago Heights, 25.8% in Calumet City and 41.5% in Park Forest. Most of Cook County’s 5.17 million residents benefit from inequities in the property tax system, which means there is insufficient political incentive to fix the broken system. People in the Southland, however, suffer the most.
