TheBlackening is a hybrid animal of a movie that uses comedy as a claw.

Horror has always been fertile ground for reinterpretation. It may seem less obvious, given the genre’s fondness for stubbornly adhering to its definitive texts . Horror is among the most mutable cinematic styles, and particularly on the subject of Black stories. This is whyworks so triumphantly. It has flair and invention and agility but is also certain about what it is and even more certain about what it is not. It isn’t bogged down by social commentary , nor does it want to be.

In the end, the film is more than its excellent premise. I would urge you to pay less attention to what it’s about and instead revel in what it pulls off. It goes where few horror films have dared.doesn’t treat its characters as a sick punchline, bludgeoned to death in the first 20 minutes, or attempt to speak from the nerve center of white redemption, as so many American horror films love to do. For once, everyone is in on the joke.
