Last month, I got to see a screening of the new “Flamin’ Hot” film. It’s the origin story of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, the orange-fingered treat everyone who isn’t allergic to dairy loves. Honestly, even if you are lactose-intolerant, you probably love them as well.
Because the chip isn’t the point. “Flamin’ Hot” is a story of alchemy: the ability to turn nothing into something, to turn base metal into gold. And what embodies Brown and Black people in this country more than the ability to turn nothing into something? I cried through this film because Richard is my father and my mother. I imagine other people in the room were crying because they too saw their grandmothers, their ancestors, their community, any mother and father who wants their Brown kids to make it in this life, in this country , any parent who while shining shoes subtly drops pearls of wisdom.
I watched Richard “play the part” and make the life he wanted, the life he knew he deserved, coming up against this wall of “will I, can I, should I?” over and over again, and I watched him tear it down brick by brick.
