The English version of Godzilla's second movie refers to the King of the Monsters as 'Gigantis.' Here's why Godzilla's name was changed.

The American version of Godzilla Raids Again saw the King of the Monsters go by a new name, “Gigantis.” Despite the name of the kaiju already being established as “Godzilla” in the 1954 classic, the sequel picked a new moniker for the monster. Not only that, but that version of the film came complete with a title that recognized the name change, Gigantis, the Fire Monster.

Godzilla Raids Again is the second installment in Toho’s Godzilla franchise. The film is primarily remembered for introducing a key part of the formula for most Godzilla films. Monster fights are instrumental to the Godzilla franchise, but his only real adversary in Godzilla was the military. Godzilla Raids Again set a new precedent for the franchise by having him go up against his first kaiju opponent, Anguirus.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Why Godzilla Has A Different Name In Godzilla Raids Again In 1959, the Godzilla sequel received a North America release where it was given the title, Gigantis, the Fire Monster. The story was consistent with the title, with the English-dubbed characters calling Godzilla “Gigantis” throughout the film.

Why Godzilla’s Name Change Wasn’t Needed For The Story It’s possible that since Godzilla wasn’t a massive icon at this point, producers like Schreibman didn’t feel the need to connect the 1955 movie with its predecessor. But narratively speaking, Godzilla Raids Again didn’t actually have to rename Godzilla for the reason provided by Schreibman, largely because the movie had an in-universe explanation for the monster’s emergence in Japan.
