She was 25, and knew she needed a retreat where she could be alone with her thoughts and her faith. Schmidt applied to several convents in Canada and one in Lourdes in France. “I received word from Lourdes they would gladly accommodate me and wouldn’t charge me anything as long as I did cleaning duties in the mornings. I didn’t speak any French so I knew there would be fewer distractions and I could truly be alone with my thoughts. It was amazing. It was what I needed.
