is, to the very day, 150 years younger than Charles Dickens. There must be something about that early February birthday, as in his day, Dickens was the great performer of his own work and Izzard now continues in the same exuberant vein.
Izzard is dyslexic and never read a classic novel. Yet that birthday connection enticed her towards the Dickens oeuvre and now she performs the work solo in a little under two hours’ stage time. It’s a notable feat of both memory and acting, but Izzard is, after all, the comedian who did her stand-up routine in French, German and Spanish, and since 2009 has run 131 marathons to raise money for charity.
There is, of course, a lot to get through in this story of orphan boy Pip yearning to be a gentleman and having his prospects suddenly transformed by a mysterious benefactor. Izzard, with bright red nails and knee-high boots, takes the tale at a tremendous lick, which gives rise to initial concern as to whether those not intimately familiar with the 19 characters she plays will be bewildered.
